Archive for March, 2008

I woke up a 4am–the wind was howling outside.  Ate breakfast and had coffee at 5:30am.  Ran on the treadmill due to the gale–notched up the incline and booked it.  Best short run I have had since starting this journey on March 2.  Maybe I should always eat an hour or so before I run.  Finished off with 8 minutes of intense pilates ab workout.  Felt so good, I mopped the floors!!!

It happened again–my run was plagued by 15 mph winds and gusts to 22mph. (The wind picked up as I was warming up).  I didn’t let the wind bother me today–”it doesn’t matter” and pressed on.  I could tell that my body was stronger than two weeks ago when I ran in the wind.  I even did a small hill.

My arms were sore from shooting yesterday, but worked through it. Endurance through reps is increasing–light weight (3-8lb)  I have been reading up on nutrition–I’m not much of an eater.  I need to increase my caloric intake and eat more protein.  Grocery store here I come.  I am so looking forward to my run tomorrow.

Since today was my hard earned day off I worked my horse first then went to the local shooting range and shot skeet for a couple of hours. I am not a hunter but love the challenge of shooting a moving target of clay.  Guess you folks that hit a tiny white ball know the feeling.  I hadn’t shot skeet in a while and could feel a difference in my arm strength thanks to the weight training I have been doing.  Spring is in the air–

Where do I put in dressage training on the little pie chart? lol Yesterday afternoon, I had a dressage lesson.  This was after my 5 mile run in the morning. My lessons are about an hour long and this doesn’t include hooking up the trailer, grooming, tacking up, etc.  I was exhausted.  This morning I was scheduled to run 4 miles and after 3 I called it quits.  I must NOT train my horse on the days I train me.  At least not now, I am not up to it.

Wind was only 8mph–55 degrees and sunny.  I felt sluggish until about mile 3.  Legs didn’t feel tired but I guess yesterday’s pace left them with less oomph.  Come to think of it, my warm up wasn’t as thorough as usual because I was cold….live and learn.  Guess thats what this blog thing is all about–think, journal, learn from experience.  Positive side–it is spring break, my daily schedule is out of whack and I get up and run.

This is my second summer in Texas (I lived in Canada before that) and I am fighting allergies. They say the Brazos Valley is the allergy capital of Texas and I am here to verify it. After a sneezing Monday and a sleepless Monday night, I ran this morning inside–the wind was from the north–I could see ripples on the pond and didn’t want to breathe any allergens. I am feeling so much stronger in my third week. I have 30 miles on my new shoes and they feel great. Mentally my runs fly by.

This morning was tough.  I started a serious running program about three weeks ago.  I usually run on my treadmill because it looks out over the pool which looks out over the pond which looks out over the horse pasture.  I run my 3 or 4 or 5 miles and watch the outside activity.  (I then usually go outside and ride).  I know races are ran outside (lol), so this morning I hit the trail.  The wind was blowing 21 mph!!! I only weigh 100lbs–it was all I could do to go forward at times.  So, how do you handle the wind?

I ate too much too late last night.  I was rather ill this morning so I ran on the treadmill to salsa music just in case…I imagined myself in one of those  salsa dresses dancing the night away and before I knew it the 3 miles were up.  Note to self–be careful how much you eat and what time it is.  Tomorrow is my third long run and it will be 7 miles.  Wow–

My first day with”Love” (Jari that is).  Discovered that my deltoids are the weakest of my muscle groups and that I have a weak right abductor muscle.  Need to purchase some 5lb hand weights and start there on the shoulders.  Back, biceps and triceps can handle the 10lb weight.  Did notice that comparing my runs from last week to this week, the abductor muscle didn’t get as tired.
