up early getting ready for the big trip tomorrow.  had to haul feed to the horse barn before it got hot and ended up dealing with this new bull out in the pasture….i took him down….lol.  hadn’t done my strength workout in ages–just been busy running–so my arms got sort of wobbly towards the end (guess it was from wrestling that darn bull…).  we are taking school supplies to the indigenous villages of the Amazon river basin as we travel the river.  my kids had a blast buying all the goodies to take.  tomorrow i will do my long run–planning on 18 miles–then i will have 10 days off.

Did my hill work in the new shoes and my toes are happy!!!  Such a difference.  I ran 4 minutes then walked 30 seconds the entire way and stopped for water every 2.4 miles (the hill is 1.2 down and 1.2 up–my car is parked at the top).  I felt stronger at the end than the time before.  Yeah.

When I started this running thing I went to the local shoe store, tried on lots of shoes, and found a pair that felt good.  I put almost 400 miles on these shoes and started having some problems with my toes–burning, callousing–and some pain above my knees.  When in Austin this past week I went to a running store and had my old shoes looked at and discussed my issues.  The guy had me try on lots of shoes but the plus was, they had a treadmill in there with a mirror in front of it and we ran in each shoe.  Turns out the first pair were too wide in the heel and the toe area for my foot.  I bought a new pair completely fitted for me.  So, this morning I went for a short run to try them out.  I could feel an instant difference in the way the shoe hugged my heel and held my toes.  I could also feel a difference in the way I ran.  It was as if the shoe was correcting old habits.  I sort of felt like a kid learning how to walk!  When I jogged up the stairs to the shower, my knee felt great.  I have three days to run in my shoes before I go on summer holiday (we are going to Peru to the Amazon–won’t be running for 10 days–will be hiking though).  I wonder how long it will take my legs to catch up to the new alignment.

that nearly killed me.  our group run was low on runners, after all it is holiday season, and i ended up running with “eric”.  i ran the first two miles by myself, knowing that eric’s pace is too fast for me.  well, the nice guy he is, he waited for me at the end of the two mile segment on the trails and promised me he would slow down for the road section of the run because it was heating up.  there were times i caught myself going way too fast and managed to pull him back some!! we stopped for water about every 20 minutes.  at the end i needed to stop about every 10 minutes for water.  i came home and did my usual saturday routine but around 4pm i was toast.  i developed a headache and felt wobbly.  i slept 17 hours. today i took it easy–swam a little.  got some sun. it was 100 degrees today!!!

well, i don’t know….i have a hard time getting back my running pace after walking a minute.  walking isn’t a verra comfortable gait for me (gosh, i sound like a horse–but it is hard to find a horse that has three good gaits).  had a little wind but did my hills with more strength. i am off for two days taking my daughter to register for university in Austin, Texas.  wow–half empty nester (my son is in grade 10).

Drove over to the road that is pretty much uphill for 1.2 then downhill for 1.2.  Warmed up for the first downhill stretch then started in with the 4 and 1’s for the rest of the workout.  Hills one and two were okay, hill three was a booger (the sun was right in my face and I was getting tired).  Spent the afternoon watching Tiger tie the US Open then bbq’d steaks for Father’s Day.  Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!!!

i hadn’t done any ’strength’ training for a while.  doing good to run, cool off and get to work. i could feel my muscles quaking in their ‘boots’ so i took the advice of the massage therapist i have seen a couple of times and soaked in a hot tub of salts.  we will see tomorrow how it helped.   i have all this free time because my children flew to california to visit friends.  they are out on the coast enjoying nice weather and good food–and they better be ‘making wise choices’–i always jokingly (and seriously) say that to them ever since we watched Freaky Friday years ago.  they laugh and go on, but i tell ya—they have leaned on those words of wisdom and shared some of their wise choices with me.  i’ve got such rational kids….

group met at the track at 6:30am for some timed miles.  i ran my mile in 7:37–yes, i am a jet, let me tell ya–lol. then did 3 more in about 26 minutes.  it was still and hot–88 by 7am.  we sucked down the water; we poured water on ourselves; the guys rung out their shirts and could have filled a bucket; my car seat was sopping by the time i got home.  funny thing is, i can’t wait until tomorrow to do it all over again.

Okay–I started out with my ‘water belt’ on with a few snacks in the pocket. This was a first–it took some getting used to it wiggling on my body. It was hard to chew and run–I felt like a little kid trying to breathe, chew, swallow and run–wow, that takes coordination!!! First 8 miles were awesome. Then I hit the ‘hill’. It was one mile up then one mile down–of course, it undulated to and fro but I was going at an ascent the entire way. I had to utilize the run/walk breaks my running group practices (they are a Galloway training group). I would run for about 6 minutes then walk 30 seconds (and drink–I have not mastered drinking AND running) and towards the end I switched over to the 4 and 1’s. The hill made me tired.

All in all I was pleased. The other firsts were chaffing on my legs from the shorts (noticed that in the shower–looked like someone had dotted me with a red marker around the top of the thighs) and sore toes!!The tips of my toes were sore–lesson learned there–cut my toenails shorter (I wear flip flops all the time and had really pretty manicured toenails) Not anymore. Too funny.
